This exquisite French flower is a miniature beauty, boasting golden petals with hints of deep red. Originating from Mexico and Central America, it found its way to Europe via explorers and has since become a beloved ornamental plant. Its compact size makes it perfect for small gardens or container cultivation. Renowned for its protective qualities, it's often used as a companion plant to safeguard crops from diseases and pests. The genus name "Tagetes" stems from Tages, an ancient deity, while the species name "patula" reflects its wide-spreading blossoms.

How To Grow

Planting: Plant seeds directly in the soil during spring, ensuring they are just below the soil surface. Maintain slight moisture in the soil until germination occurs. Alternatively, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks prior to the last spring frost. These seeds thrive in high humidity and temperatures around 21 degrees Celsius. Expect germination within 5-10 days.

Cultivation: Water seedlings occasionally until they establish themselves; mature plants can withstand some drought, but watering during dry spells will promote better flowering. Prune back the growing stems to promote bushier growth. Removing faded blooms encourages continuous flowering. This plant attracts bees and butterflies and will self-seed under favorable growing conditions. It serves as an excellent choice for borders or container gardening.

Harvesting

Gathering: When harvesting for cut flowers, opt for stems bearing freshly opened blossoms. Remove any foliage that may sit below the water level and promptly place the stems in water.

Seed Saving

Seed Preservation: Permit the flowers to naturally shed their petals and progress into spiky seed clusters. Once fully ripe, these clusters will turn brown or dark brown and can be effortlessly disassembled to expose the slender, pointed seeds. Collect the matured seed clusters and lay them out to desiccate in a shaded area away from direct sunlight. Once thoroughly dried, dismantle the clusters to extract the seeds from the husks. Store the purified seeds in a cool, dry location.
