Bloomsdale Longstanding spinach might just become your top pick! This variety boasts large, crinkled leaves that are deep green and thick in texture. With its slow-bolting nature and a maturity period of just 45 days, it's an excellent option for planting in the late spring and summer.

In 1784, David Landreth, an Englishman, established the first commercial seed business in downtown Philadelphia. Alongside his brother Cuthbert, they developed Bloomsdale Longstanding spinach, introducing it to customers in 1826. Renowned for its ability to withstand temperature fluctuations without bolting, Bloomsdale became a favorite among gardeners. Its excellence was recognized in 1937 when it was awarded the prestigious AAS Award.

Bloomsdale Spinach is a fast-growing variety with deeply savoyed leaves, making it perfect for beginners. This open-pollinated heirloom produces tender, meaty leaves with a delightful flavor and an impressive nutritional profile.

Delicious and Nutritious - Developed in 1874, Bloomsdale Spinach yields thick, glossy leaves that are deeply savoyed and rich in flavor with minimal bitterness. Spinach is packed with essential nutrients like folate, iron, magnesium, and calcium.

Perfect for Beginners - Bloomsdale is an ideal choice for autumn planting to overwinter. It boasts a high germination rate even in cooler temperatures, is cold hardy, and requires minimal maintenance.

    How To Grow

Sowing: Since Bloomsdale Longstanding spinach thrives in cool conditions and can withstand temperatures below zero when adequately protected, it's best to plant Bloomsdale spinach seeds as soon as the soil is workable in spring or after the summer heat for a fall harvest. In regions with milder winters, spinach can be grown throughout the winter months. Plant the seeds in well-tilled soil at a depth of 1.3 cm and space them 5 cm apart in rows spaced 30-45 cm apart. Later, thin the seedlings to 10-20 cm apart. For a continuous supply, sow more seeds every 10 days until the onset of summer heat, as spinach seeds become dormant at temperatures above 26-29 degrees Celsius. Spinach thrives in partial shade and can be grown under tall crops like corn or pole beans.

Growing: To minimize root disturbance, apply a layer of mulch to suppress weeds. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, as inconsistent watering can induce bolting. Provide shade if temperatures exceed 26 degrees Celsius, although Bloomsdale can tolerate some heat.

    Harvesting

Begin harvesting spinach leaves as soon as they reach a suitable size for consumption. For individual leaf harvest, pick the larger leaves from the outer part of the plant. Alternatively, harvest the entire plant by cutting it at ground level, allowing new leaves to regrow. If the plant bolts and produces a flower stalk, the leaves may become stronger in flavor but can still be used.

    Seed Saving

Due to spinach's tendency to cross-pollinate, isolation may be necessary to maintain genetic purity. For optimal genetic diversity, collect seeds from 15-20 Bloomsdale spinach plants, avoiding plants that bolt prematurely or exhibit undesirable traits. The plant will produce a flowering stalk in response to long days and warm temperatures. Harvest the mature seed pods shortly after the plant's leaves turn yellow. When handling the prickly pods, gloves may be helpful. Dry the entire plant in a sheltered location or outdoors if weather conditions permit. Remove the pods from the stalk by gently rubbing them. Clean the pods by removing dried leaves and debris. The prickly pods can be left intact or removed before storage. Store the Bloomsdale spinach seeds in a cool, dry place for up to three years.
