Snowball Y Improved is a self-blanching cauliflower variety that requires no tying! The smooth white heads with even curds grow to a diameter of 17.8 cm. Suitable for harvesting in fall and winter, these heads are ideal for both fresh market sales and freezing. They are known for their reliability, high yield, and excellent quality!

Despite Mark Twain's assertion that cauliflower is merely cabbage with a higher education, this vegetable enjoyed immense popularity in the courts of French royalty, including Louis XIV. Believed to have originated in Cyprus, cauliflower has been documented in Arab, Mediterranean, and African regions, as well as the Roman Empire. By the 17th century, cauliflower had made its way to England, and Italian immigrants were among the first to recognize its culinary value and introduce it to America, where it quickly became a staple in both home and commercial gardens.

Snowball Cauliflower seeds are an exceptional option for home gardeners. This cauliflower variety matures early and produces uniform, delicious, and visually appealing heads.

Exceptional Taste - Snowball's high-quality, flavorful cauliflower is cherished by home gardeners for its consistent excellence. Bountiful Harvests - With its 12.7-17.8 cm snow-white head boasting uniform curds, Snowball is known for its generous yields and resistance to sun damage thanks to its large outer leaves.

    How To Grow

Sowing: To ensure an early harvest, begin planting your Snowball Y Improved cauliflower seeds in peat pots to prevent root disturbance later on. Plant the seeds at a depth of 1.3 cm, 8-12 weeks prior to the last expected frost. Gradually acclimate the seedlings to outdoor conditions by exposing them to the weather for a few hours each day. Approximately 2 weeks before the final expected spring frost, transplant them into the garden, ensuring a spacing of 38-45 cm apart. Cauliflower thrives best in temperatures ranging from 14-20°C. Alternatively, cauliflower can be planted in midsummer for a fall harvest. For beneficial companion planting, consider planting cauliflower alongside celery, which helps deter the destructive white cabbage moth. Avoid pairing Snowball Y Improved cauliflower with tomatoes.

Growing: Maintain consistently moist soil enriched with compost or organic matter to promote rapid growth, as cauliflower is most tender when it matures quickly. As Snowball varieties of cauliflower are self-blanching, no tying is necessary.

    Harvesting

Harvest cauliflower heads while the small buds remain firm and tightly packed. Typically, mature heads measure between 15-30 cm in size. Cut them off at the base, ensuring to include a few leaves.

    Seed Saving

In regions where the ground freezes during winter, it is essential to dig up cauliflower plants before the first heavy frost. Store them in sand or sawdust throughout the winter, and replant them in the spring. Collect seeds from approximately six plants to maintain optimal genetic diversity. In warmer climates, leave cauliflower plants in the ground and cover them thickly with mulch over the winter season. In spring, allow the plants to flower; once the pods on the stalk turn brown and dry, cut them off and allow them to fully dry. Extract the seeds from the pods and store Snowball Y Improved cauliflower seeds in a cool, dry location for up to five years.
