Cubanelle, a frying pepper measuring 15-25 centimeters in length, is a staple in Caribbean cuisine. Known for its sweet flavor with a hint of mild heat, it's perfect for roasting and stuffing. While it's best to harvest these peppers when they're still green for optimal flavor and texture, they mature into fiery orange-red hues.

Caribbean Frying Pepper - Cubanelle, ranging from 15-25 centimeters long, is a popular choice in Latin, Italian, and Slavic dishes. With a sweet taste and mild to moderate heat (100-1000 Scoville units), it's versatile for roasting, stuffing, grilling, or frying. These flavorful peppers add zest to salads and are commonly used in crafting traditional yellow mole sauce.

Beautiful Peppers - Cubanelle peppers offer a delightful transformation from yellow-green when young to vibrant shades of fiery orange and bright red as they mature. With thinner walls compared to bell peppers, they exhibit a slightly wrinkled appearance and a gentle curve.

Peppers cultivated from our Cubanelle pepper seeds boast sweetness and mildness. Ranging from 10-15 centimeters long, they transition from green to red upon full maturation. Their rich flavor and lower water content make them ideal for frying and cooking.

This sweet pepper likely originated in Central America, where it remains prevalent in markets and gardens. The Dominican Republic stands out for its cultivation and export of Cubanelle peppers and Cubanelle pepper seeds, known for their distinctive shape and varied colors.

    How To Grow

Sowing: Begin planting our Cubanelle pepper seeds indoors in peat pots approximately 8 weeks prior to the last expected spring frost. Plant them about 1 cm deep and maintain the soil temperature between 27-29°C until they sprout; ensure they receive 12-16 hours of light daily, either from sunlight or a grow lamp. Once daytime temperatures consistently reach 15-18°C and nighttime temperatures do not drop below 10°C, it's time to transplant the seedlings at a distance of 30-40 cm apart. Gradually acclimating the plants to outdoor conditions over several days can help prevent transplant shock. Peppers also thrive in containers or raised garden beds.

Growing: Maintain consistent soil moisture and keep the area free from weeds; applying mulch around the plants can aid in this. Should the plants begin to wilt due to excessive heat and sunlight, consider providing some shade.

    Harvesting

The decision of when to harvest sweet peppers largely depends on your preference for their color and sweetness. Peppers tend to become sweeter as they mature on the plant. However, allowing peppers to fully mature signals the plant to cease production. Harvesting while the peppers are still green encourages continued fruiting. To avoid damaging the delicate stems, use scissors or a knife to cut the peppers from the plant.

    Seed Saving

Be aware that peppers can cross-pollinate with other pepper varieties, so measures such as isolation or using cages might be necessary to maintain genetic purity. Wait for the pepper to fully ripen, then open it to remove the seeds. Lay the seeds out to dry for roughly two weeks. Store the dried seeds in a cool, dry place, where they can remain viable for up to two years.
