The Garden Peach tomato, known for its petite 3 oz tomato ranging from bright yellow to peach in color, is a hybrid variety originating from the mountains of South America. Resembling a peach with its slightly fuzzy skin, this heirloom tomato offers a unique visual appeal. Its flavor is characterized by lightness, cleanliness, fruitiness, and low acidity. With a maturity period of 80 days, it is considered a long keeper, capable of storing for up to 4 months. Classified as indeterminate, it continues to produce over time.

Originating from the mountainous regions of South America and native to the tropical Amazon area, the Garden Peach tomato is referred to as "cocona" in Peru. Its introduction to the United States dates back to 1862.

    How To Grow

Sowing: Begin the tomato-growing process by initiating seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the final frost of spring. Plant the seeds in a flat, ensuring they are buried 0.6 centimeters deep and spaced 2.5 centimeters apart. Maintain a temperature of 21-24 degrees Celsius for optimal germination, ensuring adequate light exposure either from a sunny window or under a grow light. Keep the soil consistently moist while ensuring proper drainage. Upon the emergence of the second set of leaves, transplant the seedlings into individual pots. During transplanting, bury the stems up to the lowest set of leaves to foster robust root development. Approximately a week before transplanting the seedlings outdoors, gradually expose them to outdoor conditions during the day to harden them off. It's crucial to wait until all frost threats have subsided before transplanting them outside. Once the soil temperature reaches a minimum of 21 degrees Celsius, plant the seedlings in a location receiving full sun and rich soil. Again, bury the entire stem up to the lowest set of leaves. If utilizing a trellis, space the plants 60 centimeters apart; however, if allowing the vines to sprawl, space them 90-120 centimeters apart. For optimal companion planting, consider pairing tomatoes with carrots or onions while avoiding cabbage or potatoes.

Growing: Indeterminate tomato varieties, like the Garden Peach, thrive with proper support such as trellises, which help protect them from various pests and diseases associated with excessive soil contact. Install the supports before the vines develop fully. As the vines grow, tying them to the support structures aids in their development. Protect the plants from temperatures below 13 degrees Celsius, as these can hinder production. Applying a generous layer of mulch assists in moisture retention and weed control. Water the plants weekly, ensuring to avoid wetting the leaves. Regularly prune the "suckers," or shoots between the main stem and branches, to enhance production and plant vigor. Garden Peach tomatoes demonstrate high resistance to splitting, ensuring a more reliable harvest.

    Harvesting

Harvesting: To determine the ripeness of Garden Peach tomatoes, gently press them; ripe tomatoes should yield slightly to pressure. Additionally, their mature color indicates ripeness. If the tomatoes do not detach easily from the vine, use scissors to cut them. For optimal flavor, tomatoes ripened on the vine are preferred. However, when frost is imminent, all tomatoes, including green ones, should be harvested. Unripe tomatoes can ripen over time if stored in a warm location away from direct sunlight. Garden Peach tomatoes are known for their light, somewhat fruity flavor.

    Seed Saving

Seed Saving: Due to the low likelihood of cross-pollination between most tomato varieties, isolation is generally unnecessary. Begin by selecting fully ripe Garden Peach tomatoes. Cut them in half horizontally, squeezing out the pulp into a container. For smaller tomatoes, an alternative method involves blending them in a blender until the seeds are exposed without damage. Allow the mixture to ferment for several days until a thick layer of mold develops; this process facilitates the removal of the gelatinous layer surrounding the seeds. Remove the mold and debris, saving the clean seeds at the bottom. Rinse the seeds in a strainer under running water until they are thoroughly clean, then spread them out to dry in a sheltered area away from direct sunlight. Stir the seeds twice daily, and if the air is humid, use a fan to expedite drying. Once completely dry, store the seeds in a cool, dry location for up to four years.
