With its delightful violet, golden, and ivory blooms, this enchanting wildflower bears a striking resemblance to the miniature pansy. Its petite stature adds a touch of charm to any garden landscape, and it often self-sows, gracing the surroundings with its presence year after year.

Originally, this vibrant flower thrived in the wilds of Europe, where it was affectionately referred to as "hearts-ease." It also garnered various other endearing monikers such as Love in Idleness, the Trinity Herb, and Three Faces in a Hood. While the origins of the name "Johnny" remain uncertain, it gained popularity in 18th century America. Notably, Thomas Jefferson's garden records from April 1, 1767, include mention of planting this beloved flower.

The dainty blossoms of this wildflower bring a touch of whimsy to gardens and landscapes, evoking a sense of nostalgia and romance. Their cheerful hues and delicate features make them a favorite among gardeners seeking to add a dash of elegance to their outdoor spaces.

As a symbol of resilience and natural beauty, this wildflower continues to captivate hearts and imaginations, spreading its joyous colors wherever it blooms. Its enduring presence in gardens serves as a reminder of the simple pleasures found in nature's wonders, enriching the lives of all who encounter its splendor.

How To Grow

Sowing: Plant the seeds directly into the soil in spring, ensuring they are placed just below the surface. Maintain light moisture in the soil until germination occurs, typically within 1-2 weeks. Alternatively, Viola Tricolor seeds can be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost.

Growing: Provide occasional watering to seedlings until they establish themselves. Weed control is important as this plant does not compete well with other vegetation. Mature plants exhibit good tolerance to drought but thrive in well-drained, moist soil. They also show resilience to both hot and cold conditions. Viola Tricolor adapts well to rocky or sandy soil types and readily self-seeds.

Harvesting

Harvesting: While these flowers do not fare well as cut blooms, they flourish best when left outdoors to adorn the garden.

Seed Saving

After the flowers have faded, watch for the development of oval pods. Once ripe, each pod will split into three sections, revealing the mature seeds. Collect the Johnny Jump-Up flower seeds promptly, as their viability diminishes quickly. For optimal germination, it's best to plant them immediately. If storage is necessary, keep the Viola Tricolor seeds refrigerated until planting time.
