These petite pumpkins, perfectly sized to fit in the palm of your hand, serve not only as delightful decorations but also as edible treats! Once fully ripened on the vine, Jack Be Little pumpkins maintain their decorative allure for a remarkable span of up to a year, adding enduring charm to any setting. With their endearing shape and vibrant hue, these pumpkins require approximately 95 days to achieve full maturity, making them a delightful addition to gardens and culinary endeavors alike.

Originating from the gardens of early Native Americans, these early pumpkins, categorized as a form of squash, hold significant historical and cultural importance. Among the "three sisters" crops beans, corn, and squash cultivated by Native Americans, pumpkins played a crucial role due to their symbiotic relationship with the other crops, providing essential benefits to both plant health and harvest yield. Over time, pumpkins and squash emerged as indispensable food staples for the settlers of the New World, sustaining communities and enriching culinary traditions with their versatile uses and nutritional value.

In addition to being a very decorative pumpkin, the Jack Be Little pumpkin is also edible. The Jack Be Little pumpkin is extremely easy to grow and will mature to around 3 - 4 lbs. Its scientific name is Cucurbita pepo. It will hold its decorative value for up to a year after being harvested.  Tiny 5-7cm, sweet orange flesh, deeply ribbed flattened orange fruit, delightful miniature, appealing table decoration and craft, shelf life to 12 months, dried on the vine.

How To Grow

Sowing: Gardeners in regions with short growing seasons may opt to initiate the cultivation of Jack Be Little pumpkin seeds indoors approximately one month before the anticipated final frost date. Due to pumpkins' susceptibility to transplanting, it is advisable to utilize peat pots for seed starting. Plant two seeds per pot, subsequently removing the weaker seedling once they have germinated. Prior to transplanting, gradually acclimate the seedlings to outdoor conditions by exposing them to the elements for a few hours each day during the week leading up to transplantation. Following the last frost or when the soil temperature reaches an average of 15.5 degrees Celsius, transplant the seedlings into nutrient-rich soil, spacing them 2.4-3 meters apart in rows spaced 300-360 centimeters apart. Alternatively, seedlings can be planted in pairs in mounds, also spaced 240-300 centimeters apart. For direct sowing, plant seeds one week after the last frost at a depth of 1.3 cm, with 90-120 cm between each seed and thin to 240-300 centimeters apart. Consider companion planting with corn for mutual benefits, while avoiding planting with potatoes.

Growing: Protect pumpkin seedlings from frost by providing covering if cold weather is anticipated. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist, but take care to avoid wetting the leaves to prevent diseases such as rot or mildew. Once the vines begin to develop, apply a layer of mulch to conserve moisture, suppress weed growth, and protect the pumpkins from soil contact. Pinch off all blooms by midsummer to redirect the plant's energy towards pumpkin development.

Harvesting

Pumpkins are ready for harvesting when the stem begins to dry, and the skin becomes too tough to pierce with a fingernail. To prevent damage from cold weather, it is advisable to harvest pumpkins before the onset of the first frost. Cut the stem using a sharp knife, leaving a 5-7.5 cm length. Avoid carrying the pumpkin by the stem, as it may break off, leading to rapid deterioration. Cure the harvested pumpkins in a sunny or dry location until the stem shrivels. Avoid washing pumpkins intended for storage. Jack Be Little pumpkins can be stored for nearly a year and boast flavorful flesh alongside their decorative appeal.

Seed Saving

Once the pumpkin has been adequately cured, the seeds will have matured. Cut open the pumpkin, remove the pulp and seeds, and rinse off any remaining pulp. Place the mixture in a bowl of water to separate the viable seeds; discard any that float, as they are likely not viable. Spread the viable seeds out to dry for 2-3 weeks, ensuring they are stirred periodically to ensure thorough drying. Store the Jack Be Little pumpkin seeds in a cool, dry location for up to four years.
