Radiant Sunflowers - With sunny yellow blossoms spanning 20 centimeters across, these towering sunflowers add a cheerful touch to any garden, and their cut flowers make stunning arrangements. Plant Lemon Queen to encourage native bee populations, as these pollinators are drawn to their bright and beautiful blooms. Delicious and Decorative - Beyond their seeds, Lemon Queen's petals are a delightful addition to salads and various dishes. The flower buds can also be cooked for a tasty treat.

Featuring pale yellow petals and rich chocolate brown centers, this sunflower variety is a visual delight. Its moderate height makes it suitable for gardens with limited space or concerns about wind exposure.

Sunflowers earned their name from their tendency to track the sun, exhibiting heliotropism during their early growth stages. While mature blossoms typically face east, they begin by following the sun's path from east to west. These versatile plants boast an ancient history, dating back to Native American tribes around 2000 BC, who utilized their seeds for oil, meal, and snacks, as well as for dye and medicinal purposes. By the 18th century, sunflowers had gained popularity in European gardens and kitchens, becoming a significant source of heart-healthy oil in both Europe and America. Revered as symbols of happiness, loyalty, and constancy, sunflowers hold a special place in the language of flowers.

How To Grow

Sowing: Plant Lemon Queen Sunflower seeds directly outdoors in late spring when the soil temperature reaches 21-24 degrees Celsius, placing them 2.54 centimeters deep and spacing them 15.24 centimeters apart in well-drained soil. Seeds will germinate within 8-10 days, and seedlings should be thinned to allow the strongest ones to thrive. Protect the seeds from birds and animals during sprouting by using netting or a screen.

Growing: Water the seedlings occasionally as they grow, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Mature plants are drought-tolerant but may benefit from regular fertilization. Avoid overwatering to prevent disease. Lemon Queen Sunflowers attract bees, butterflies, and birds, enhancing biodiversity in your garden.

Harvesting

For fresh flowers, cut the stems 45-60 centimeters long at a 45-degree angle and remove any leaves below the water level. Change the water every three days for optimal vase life. To save seeds, cover the heads with cheesecloth as they ripen, then cut them leaving several inches of stem. Dry them in a well-ventilated area until the heads turn brown and the seeds develop a hard coating. Remove the seeds by gently rubbing the dried heads and store them in an airtight container.

Seed Saving

Cover the ripening heads with cheesecloth to protect them from birds and squirrels. Once the petals drop and the back of the head turns brown, cut the heads and dry them in a well-ventilated area. After drying, gently rub the heads to remove the seeds, and store them in a cool, dry place for future planting.
