Known for its reliability, the 'Nebraska Wedding' tomato produces striking 10.16 centimeters round fruits with vibrant orange skin, boasting a well-balanced flavor that delights the palate. While typically reaching heights under 36 centimeters, these plants benefit from staking to support their abundant fruiting. Renowned as the "ultimate love apple," this variety was immortalized in Amy Goldman's captivating tale within The Heirloom Tomato. It was introduced to the Seed Savers Exchange community in 1983 by Dorothy Beiswenger, who received seeds from Betty Englert, a descendant of pioneers who brought this cherished variety to western Nebraska in the late 1800s, where it became a cherished tradition to gift it to newlywed family members and friends.

With a growing period of 90 days, the 'Nebraska Wedding' tomato is an indeterminate variety, with its regular-leaf plants reaching heights of about five feet by the end of the season. Cultivated on farms in Oregon, these plants yield stunning, smooth-skinned fruits with a diameter of four inches, ranging from eight to twenty ounces each, exhibiting a delightful apricot-orange hue and offering an excellent, slightly tart flavor that adds a zing to culinary creations.

Initially listed in the 1983 Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook by Dorothy Beiswenger of Crookston, Minnesota, the history of 'Nebraska Wedding' tomato dates back generations. Mrs. Beiswenger received the seeds from Mrs. Englert of Sandpoint, Idaho, who, at seventy-two years old, shared a captivating story about her pioneer ancestors who brought the seeds to western Nebraska in the late 1800s. According to Mrs. Englert's account, the seeds of this tomato were often bestowed upon Nebraska brides as cherished wedding gifts, preserving the legacy of this beloved variety for future generations to enjoy. Each packet of seeds contains a minimum of 20 seeds, ensuring ample opportunity for gardeners to experience the magic of this historic tomato.

    How To Grow

For optimal growth, sow Nebraska Wedding tomato seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost date. Plant the seeds 0.5 cm deep in a well-draining soil mix and keep them consistently moist until germination, which usually takes 7-14 days. Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves, transplant them into larger containers or directly into the garden, spacing them about 45-60 cm apart. Provide the plants with full sunlight, ensuring they receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and provide support such as stakes or cages as the plants grow to prevent them from sprawling.

    Harvesting

When the Nebraska Wedding tomato fruits reach their mature stage, typically around 90 days after planting, they should be harvested by gently twisting them from the vine. Ripe fruits will have a vibrant apricot-orange color and a slight give when gently squeezed. It's best to harvest them in the morning when temperatures are cooler to preserve their flavor and quality.

    Seed Saving

To save seeds from Nebraska Wedding tomatoes, choose fully ripe and healthy fruits for seed extraction. Scoop out the seeds along with the gelatinous substance surrounding them and place them in a container with a little water. Ferment the seeds for about three to four days, stirring occasionally. After fermentation, rinse the seeds thoroughly and spread them out to dry on a paper towel or a screen. Once completely dry, store the seeds in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight until the next planting season.
