Also referred to as the Golden California Wonder pepper, Golden Cal Wonder pepper, or Golden Wonder pepper, the California Wonder pepper has held its place as America’s preferred sweet bell pepper since the 1920s. Distinguished by its vibrant golden hue, the California Wonder Golden pepper boasts exceptional sweetness, mirroring the traits of the classic California Wonder variety except its color.

Resembling its namesake, this pepper typically grows to a length of 10.16-13 centimeters and displays a strikingly bright golden shade, transitioning to an orange-red hue upon full ripening. Thriving in sunny conditions, the Golden Wonder pepper plant reaches heights of 61-91.44 centimeters, exhibiting a robust and upright stature. Expect bountiful harvests of stunning golden peppers from this plant, ensuring a constant supply of these delectable fruits.

Featuring a blocky shape and four distinct lobes, this bell pepper is renowned for its thick and succulent flesh, making it a popular choice for culinary endeavors. From salsas to salads, stuffing to stir-fries, and roasting to general cooking, the versatile flavor of the Golden Cal Wonder pepper lends itself well to various cooking methods. With its exceptional taste and texture, the California Wonder Golden Pepper is a favorite among chefs and home cooks alike.

This beloved sweet pepper undergoes a delightful transformation as it matures, transitioning from green to yellow and finally to orange. Known for its thick and high-quality flesh, this pepper plant thrives in both cool and warm climates, ensuring consistent performance across different growing conditions.

Originating from Central and South America, the pepper's journey to prominence began with Christopher Columbus and other explorers who introduced it to Europe in the late 16th century. Referred to as "pimiento" in Spanish, owing to its spicy flavor reminiscent of black pepper, this pepper has left an indelible mark on culinary traditions worldwide.

How To Grow

Sowing: Begin planting Golden California Wonder Pepper seeds indoors in peat pots around 20 centimeters before the last expected spring frost. Plant them approximately 1 centimeter deep and maintain the soil temperature at about 26-29 degrees Celsius until germination. Ensure they receive sunlight or artificial grow light for 12-16 hours daily. Once the outdoor temperature reaches approximately 15-18 degrees Celsius during the day and no lower than 10 degrees Celsius at night, transplant the seedlings 30-40 centimeters apart. Gradually expose the plants to outdoor conditions for a few hours each day before transplanting to reduce transplant shock. Peppers also thrive when grown in containers or raised beds. Golden California Wonder, due to its early maturation, is an excellent choice for gardeners in cooler climates.

Growing: Maintain consistent moisture in the soil and manage weed growth; mulching around Golden California Wonder Pepper plants can assist with this. If excessive heat and sunlight cause wilting, provide shade as needed.

Harvesting

Harvesting sweet peppers primarily depends on personal preferences regarding both color and sweetness. Typically, the longer peppers are allowed to mature on the vine, the sweeter they become. However, it's important to note that once peppers reach full maturity, the plant ceases production. Picking peppers while they are still green encourages continuous production. To avoid damaging the delicate stems, it's best to use a knife or scissors when removing peppers from the plant.

Seed Saving

It's important to consider that peppers have the potential to cross-pollinate with other pepper varieties. To maintain genetic purity, isolation or caging may be required. Once the pepper has reached full maturity, carefully cut it open and extract the seeds from the Golden California Wonder Pepper. Allow the seeds to air dry for approximately two weeks, ensuring they are spread out evenly. Store the Golden California Wonder Pepper seeds in a cool, dry location for up to two years to maintain their viability.
