(Brassica oleracea) requires approximately 60 days to reach maturity. If over-wintered, these robust plants maintain a compact stature while generating new growth points on the main stem, resulting in increased leaf production for spring harvests. They exhibit resistance to bolting for an extended period, approximately 3-4 weeks longer. The smooth, dark green leaves boast scalloped edges, offering exceptional tenderness. Each packet contains 2 grams of seeds, providing ample potential for cultivation.

The Premier Kale, also known as Early Hanover, is a highly productive kale variety renowned for its delicious and nutritious green leaves. This kale matures early, yielding abundant quantities of smooth, dark green foliage. Planting Premier kale in the fall enhances its performance, allowing for higher yields and increased resistance to bolting, extending this resistance by up to 4 weeks. Notably, this kale variety offers a favored taste profile and is rich in antioxidants and beta-carotene, contributing to its nutritional value.

Premier kale is recognized for its ability to produce significant quantities of dark greens, ideal for consumption by your family. Its compact nature makes it suitable for container gardening or raised beds, providing flexibility in cultivation methods. To maximize plant production, it's essential to maintain garden areas free from weeds. Additionally, vigilant monitoring for leaf-eating caterpillars, particularly during the early stages of plant growth, is recommended. Employing organic pest control methods, such as spraying with organic products or utilizing row covers, can effectively manage pest infestations.

How To Grow

Sowing and Growing
Start Premier kale seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Plant the seeds in seedling trays filled with well-draining soil, and keep them moist until germination, which typically occurs within 7-14 days. Transplant the seedlings outdoors once the soil temperature reaches around 10°C (50°F). Space the plants 30-45 centimeters apart in rows spaced at least 60 centimeters apart. Ensure the plants receive full sun and keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks to promote healthy growth. Harvest leaves as needed for consumption, starting from the outer leaves and working inward.

Harvesting

Premier kale can be harvested approximately 50-60 days after planting, once the leaves reach the desired size. To harvest, simply snip the outer leaves with clean scissors or garden shears, leaving the inner leaves to continue growing. Regular harvesting promotes continuous leaf production throughout the growing season.

Seed Saving

To save seeds from Premier kale, allow some plants to bolt and flower. Once the flowers fade, seed pods will form. Wait until these pods turn brown and dry on the plant before harvesting. Remove the pods and allow them to dry further indoors. Once completely dry, crack open the pods to extract the seeds. Store the seeds in a cool, dry place for future planting.
