Ruby Lettuce boasts a stunning deep red hue, making it the darkest red among our varieties! This lettuce not only enhances the visual appeal of your garden but also adds vibrant color to your salads. Its large, frilly leaves feature bright light-green centers contrasted by the striking ruby-red outer leaves. With excellent resistance to bolting, fading, and heat, Ruby Lettuce reaches full maturity approximately 50 days after sowing.

The origins of lettuce trace back to wild varieties originating in Asia Minor. Documented by ancient historian Herodotus, lettuce found its way onto the tables of Persian kings in the 6th century and subsequently gained popularity across Europe. Its journey continued with Columbus, who introduced it to the New World, where it became a staple crop. Today, lettuce is a ubiquitous presence in gardens worldwide.

    How To Grow

Sowing: Lettuce thrives in cooler temperatures, making it suitable for direct sowing when the soil temperature reaches a minimum of 2 degrees Celsius or as soon as the soil is workable. If the soil temperature exceeds 24 degrees Celsius, the ruby leaf lettuce seeds may enter dormancy. Directly sow the seeds in nutrient-rich soil and full sunlight, spreading them thinly in rows spaced 30-60 centimeters apart. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to a spacing of 15-20 centimeters apart. To ensure a continuous harvest throughout the season, plant successive crops every two weeks, especially in regions with mild summers or winters. For companion planting benefits, consider planting lettuce alongside onions, cucumbers, or carrots.

Growing: Lettuce possesses shallow roots, requiring consistent moisture to maintain its tenderness and sweetness. It is essential to keep the soil evenly moist. Mulching can aid in moisture retention and weed control.

    Harvesting

Lettuce maintains its optimal crispness and sweetness when harvested in the morning. For microgreens, trim the entire plant above the soil surface once it reaches a height of 2-3 inches. Many lettuce varieties have the potential to regrow for a second or even third harvest if the weather remains mild. Leaves can be continuously gathered throughout the season until the main stem begins to elongate, signaling a shift towards bitter flavor. When the plant reaches maturity, harvest the entire plant by cutting it just above the soil surface. While lettuce is best enjoyed fresh, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.

    Seed Saving

Seed Saving: As summer days lengthen, lettuce plants will begin to bolt, sending up a flowering stalk. To ensure the preservation of desirable traits, collect seeds from plants that exhibit slower bolting tendencies. Once the stalk flowers and forms pods, wait for the pods to turn light brown and split open. To prevent seed loss, gently shake the stalk head into a bag daily. Alternatively, some seed savers opt to remove the entire plant when most pods are ready for harvest, hanging it upside down in a sheltered area to dry. Extract Ruby Leaf Lettuce seeds from the pods by shaking them or crushing them by hand. These seeds may have white "feathers" attached, which can be removed by rubbing them on a fine mesh screen. Store the Ruby Leaf Lettuce seeds in a cool, dry location for 2-3 years.
