Capture attention as these vibrant blooms burst forth in a dazzling array of red, pink, and white hues! This effortlessly cultivated annual adds a touch of elegance to any garden with minimal maintenance required, attracting butterflies along the way. Originating from Mexico, these resilient annuals thrive in hot and dry climates with their innate beauty and strength. Unveiled to Spanish conquistadors during their quest for gold, these flowers adorned mission gardens, earning the name "cosmos" from priests who admired their orderly petal arrangement, reminiscent of the Greek concept of a harmonious whole. Transported to England by Spanish emissaries in the late 18th century, cosmos flowers later found their way to the United States in the subsequent century.

How To Grow

Sowing: Scatter the seeds on the soil surface in early spring or after the final frost. Ensure the soil remains lightly moist until germination occurs, typically within 10-20 days at soil temperatures ranging from 18-24 degrees Celsius. Cooler soil temperatures may prolong germination. While seedlings generally don't require thinning, they can be transplanted if overcrowded. Due to their quick germination in warm soil, they can be sown anytime before midsummer for another round of flowers. For indoor seeding, sow the seeds on the surface of a flat 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost, maintaining even soil moisture at temperatures of 21-24 degrees Celsius until germination. Once the risk of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors.

Growing: Water the plants regularly until they begin to bloom; they become drought tolerant at this stage. Avoid over-watering, as these flowers thrive in drought conditions and heat. During prolonged drought, provide occasional deep watering. While the soil doesn't need to be nutrient-rich, it must be well-drained; while they can tolerate light shade, it significantly reduces blooming. To stimulate new growth if blooming decreases, trim the plant back to 30 centimeters; expect more blossoms in about 4 weeks. Taller plants may require support or staking. If allowed to self-seed, they will produce a new batch of flowers the following year. This flower is attractive to birds, butterflies, and bees.

Harvesting

Gather the beauty of cosmos blossoms to grace your home with their charm and longevity. Snip the stems of freshly opened blossoms, ensuring to strip away any foliage that might touch the water. Enjoy these blooms in a vase for up to 7-10 days or opt for dried arrangements to add a touch of allure to your space.

Seed Saving

Seed Saving: Let the cosmos flowers shed their petals and transform into spiky seed heads. Once fully ripe, these heads will turn brown or dark brown and readily split open, exposing the slender, pointed seeds. Gather the mature seed heads and lay them out to air dry in a shaded area away from direct sunlight. Once thoroughly dry, gently break open the heads to extract the seeds from the husks. Store the cleaned seeds in a cool, dry location for future use.
