This variety doesn't yield edible turnip roots but is cultivated for its exceptional-tasting turnip greens, which are highly nutritious and rich in calcium. They are delicious when added to salads or steamed. The lush dark green leaves can grow up to nearly 60 centimeters tall when fully matured in about 45 days. Additionally, this variety is also sought after for its sprouts and tender baby leaves. The Seven Top turnip, a turnip seed variety valued for its outstanding flavor and nutritional value in its greens, is widely cultivated in the southern regions of the United States. The tradition of using turnip greens in salads dates back to ancient Greece and has remained a common practice across various civilizations throughout history.

    How To Grow

Sowing: Seven Top turnips are best planted three weeks prior to the last frost in spring or after the hottest part of summer for a fall harvest. Plant the turnip seeds directly in well-prepared soil with full sun exposure, sowing them 1.3 centimeters deep in rows spaced 30-45 centimeters apart. As the seedlings emerge, thin them to 10-15 centimeters apart.

Growing: Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Keep an eye out for pests such as the red and black harlequin bug, which should be promptly removed to prevent damage.

    Harvesting

Harvesting: Harvest the turnip greens when they reach a suitable size for consumption. If harvesting both greens and roots, pluck only 2-3 leaves per root. For the most tender and flavorful turnips, harvest when they are 2.5-7.6 centimeters in diameter. To store them, trim the tops to 1.3 centimeters and store in a cool, dark place without washing off the soil. In warmer climates, mulch can be applied, and the crop can be left in the ground throughout winter.

    Seed Saving

Seed Saving: To ensure genetic purity, isolate turnip varieties from cross-pollination. Turnips must overwinter before producing seeds. In warmer regions, mulch provides sufficient protection, while in colder areas, dig up the turnips, trim the tops to 2.5 centimeters, and store them in damp sand at 0.5-4.4 degrees Celsius until spring replanting. Once the roots send up flowering stalks, collect the seed pods when they start turning brown. Thresh the seeds from the dry pods, then store them in a cool, dry place for up to 4 years.
